In this episode of DIY Radio Control Hobbies, host Chris Chianelli delves into small-scale high-speed racing with Mini Z-Racers. After an introduction to mini Z-racers, he shows how to "hop-up" -- or add performance enhancements -- to the Dodge Viper mini-Z from Kyosho (TM). He demonstrates how to install ball bearing wheels, add a light kit, and how to install a 3-point differential shock system. In later segments, he demonstrates how to construct a portable racetrack using 1/2-inch PVC pipe and offers some racing suggestions.
Introduction to Mini Z-Racers
- Mini Z-racers are 1/25 scale (figure A), and come fully assembled and ready to run. They include many of the features found on larger RC cars, and are built to perform. Moreover, there are companies that specialize in making performance-enhancement and modification parts for these tiny racing models.
- Numerous actual auto models available as mini Z-racers. Four models available from Kyosho include the Volkswagen Beetle, Dodge Viper, Jordan Honda racer and Ferrari racer (figure B).
- The body of the Z-racer is molded ABS styrene and simply snaps on and off the chassis. With the body removed, it's possible to examine the precision steering system (figure C) including servo, differential, pinions and gears.
- The circuitry for the radio receiver and the electronic speed controller is mounted on top of the chassis (figure D).
- The motor is battery powered, and requires four AAA batteries (figure E). Dry-cell or rechargeable batteries are acceptable.
- The tiny on-off micro-switch is located on the bottom of the undercarriage (figure F).
- Once the batteries have been installed, the wheels need to be precision trimmed so that they steer and run properly. Trim is adjusted using a small trim-knob on the radio controller (figure G).
- The trigger-like mechanism on the radio controller is the throttle for the racer. The throttle is proportionately adjustable, so the speed can be decreased or increased in fine adjustments.
In the segment that follows, Chris adds performance enhancements to the Dodge Viper model from Kyosho (figure H). This particular model comes stock with some impressive features, including a real gear-differential and a true rack-and-pinion steering system (figure I). Performance enhancements to be added include a three-shock rear suspension system, ball-bearing wheels and an electric headlight/tail-light kit.
