With the Kyosho Seawind (TM ) RC racing yacht complete and thoroughly checked out, it's ready for some serious sailing. Part of the fun of RC sailing is racing other boats. In this segment, Chris Chianelli and the Seawind face some sailing challenges in competition with some other racing yachts in an RC regatta (figure A).

Design your own regatta competition using natural obstacles or manmade ones. For our demonstration, three competition yachts (figure B) from the same racing class followed a course to the middle of the lake, around a buoy (figure C) and back.

RC Racing Tip: A sly racing technique is to maneuver your yacht to the windward side of your opponent so that you can "steal his wind."

Check back soon for a downloadable video of some of the sailing regatta footage featured in the program.

    • RC Sailing Tip: Whenever sailing RC sailboats, it's advisable to have some sort of retrieval system in case the wind dies down completely when the sailboat is in the middle of the lake. Some hobbyists keep a powered RC boat handy to serve as a tugboat for retrieving laggard sailboats. Failing to have a standby retrieval system could mean that you'll be taking an unexpected swim in order to retrieve your valued racer.

    • RC Sailing Tip: If you live in a coastal region, you may want to sail your sailboat in salt water. Saltwater sailing is OK for RC boats provided that some important precautions and follow-up maintenance are followed.

      1. Wrap the boat's radio receiver and battery pack, as well as your radio transmitter, in plastic to protect the electronics from salt water.

      2. After you're done sailing in salt water, be certain to rinse the boat thoroughly in fresh water to remove any salt. Make sure no salt residue is left on any metal parts or, especially, on any radio parts.
