Your RC boat can be customized to your liking using supplied decals, logos, racing stripes, etc. In our example, however, we had customized graphics created specially for our "DIY racer."

Distinctive graphics can be designed to your specifications, then taken to a custom graphics shop and turned into decals that can be applied very easily to your boat. Graphics can be made from your company logo, a diagram, drawing or even a photograph. A graphics shop should be able to help you select or create a suitable design. There are also premade graphic decals available at hobby shops.

To apply decals or custom graphics:

    • First, clean the entire surface of the hull using household cleaner or, preferably, denatured alcohol.

    • Decide on the placement for your graphic. Place the graphic on the surface to determine exact positioning (figure A).

Tip: You may want to apply a piece of guide tape (e.g., masking tape) to the surface to help ensure that the decal is applied straight and precisely.

    • Once you've determined the exact location, slowly peel back the first layer of white plastic backing (figure B), exposing the sticky bottom surface of the decal. Peel the backing carefully and slowly to avoid damaging the printed logo.

    • Carefully apply the logo to the surface you've selected. Lay the sheet down gently (figure C) and smooth it out, working from the center outward.

    • Once the graphic is completely adhered to the surface, peel off the secondary backing (figure D), exposing the completed design (figure E).
