In this segment, Chris Chianelli takes a quick look at an assortment of extreme RC models -- including giant-scale flyers, a mega-monster truck, night flyers, radio-controlled jets and more.
Check back soon for a downloadable video clip showing some of the outrageous RC action from this episode of Radio Control Hobbies.
- The Edge 540 (TM) from Carden is a 40-percent scale model -- one of the largest RC model planes on the market (figure A).
- The Edge 540 (figure B) has a wingspan of 118" from tip to tip and is capable of some impressive airshow-style stunts like rolls and midair stalls ( figure C).
- The Terra-Crusher by Tamiya (TM) (figure D) is an over-the-top monster truck that makes rubble of its competitors. The 'Crusher comes ready-to-run, right out of the box.
- It's the largest RC monster truck currently available, but its large size doesn't keep it from catching a little air on the dirt track (figure E).
- The Sky-Surfer (TM) from Hobbico is unusual and easy to fly (figure F).
- The Eco-Piccolo (TM) from Hobby Lobby is a minuscule RC helicopter (figure G) capable of performing many of the outrageous stunts of its larger counterparts. The transmitter utilizes three axis controls -- pitch, roll and yaw.
- The Wave-Runner from Kyosho (TM) brings quickness and agility to RC aquatic craft (figure H). It's electrically powered, so it's quiet and can be run in parks' ponds or almost any small body of water.
- For the ultimate in extreme RC, radio-control jets are exact scale replicas of real turbine jets (figure I). They use scaled down jet engines and burn real jet fuel.
- These sophisticated and costly RC machines (figure J) can achieve air speeds well over 200 mph, and require expert skill from their operators. RC jets can frequently be seen in displays at actual air-shows at airbases around the U.S..
- Finally, RC hobbies don't need to end when the sun goes down. Park flyers like the Wingo (TM) from Hobby Lobby can be set up as a night-flyer by adding some relatively inexpensive wing-lights (figure K).
- Launch a couple of light-equipped park flyers (figure L), do a little nocturnal air-combat, and perhaps make your neighbors believe they've seen a UFO in the night sky (figure M).
