Using ribbons, crafter Linda Lingren creates a beautiful wall hanging. Materials:
Assortment of ribbons Power Stik® hot glue* or any hot glue Release paper* or freezer paper Interfacing Fabric Batting Wired ribbon, cut double the perimeter of the heart Satin cord Dowel *These products were offered by HB Fuller Company, which went out of business January 31, 1999. The directions were written for Power Stik hot glue, which has been discontinued. Substitute fabric glue or fusible interfacing to hold the ribbons together. - Cut the fabric backing 2" larger than your desired finished wall hanging. Cut interfacing the size of the finished wall hanging.
- To make "ribbon fabric" pieces, place a line of hot glue on the release paper or freezer paper and place a piece of ribbon over the glue. Run another line of hot glue on the paper along the edge of the first piece of ribbon. Position the second piece of ribbon over the glue, next to the first ribbon, creating a seam. Continue adding strips of ribbon until you've reached the desired size (figure A). Peel the "ribbon fabric" pieces off the paper. For this wall hanging ribbon strips were placed diagonally from the center to the edges.
- Place the fabric backing wrong side up, and position interfacing on top. Glue "ribbon fabric" pieces onto the interfacing.
- Cut a heart shape from fabric for the center. Cut a piece of batting 1/4" smaller than the heart. Place the batting in the center, and put the fabric piece right side up on top (figure B). Hot-glue the edge of the heart all around.
- Cut a piece of wire-edged ribbon double the perimeter of the heart. Pull the wire to gather the ribbon, and hot-glue the ribbon ruffle in place around the heart (figure C). Cut a piece of cord the length of the perimeter of the heart, and glue it around the heart at the edge of the gathered ribbon (figure D).
- For the side borders, fold the fabric toward the front, turning under 1", and glue in place. Glue cording along the edges (figure E), and use cording across the top edge as a hanger. If desired, run a wooden dowel through the top border for added stability.
