Craft expert Liz Miller uses a hot iron to create bubbles in polypropylene ribbon, then applies decorative pieces of the ribbon to a plain wastebasket to turn it into an attractive accessory. Materials:
Polypropylene ribbon Teflon® pressing sheet, paper backing from fusible web or aluminum foil Iron Ironing board Double-sided tape Scissors Plastic wastebasket Tulip Dimensional Paint® - Place a strip of polypropylene ribbon on an ironing board wrong side up. Cover the ribbon with a Teflon pressing sheet, the paper backing from fusible web or a sheet of aluminum foil. Liz prefers a pressing sheet or paper backing because you can see through them to check how the ribbon is bubbling.
- Set the iron at the highest heat setting. Place the iron on the pressing sheet so that it touches the sheet but doesn't press on the ribbon. Don't let the weight of the iron press on the ribbon (figure A). Keep the iron in one place, and let the heat radiate through the pressing sheet until the ribbon starts to bubble. Don't touch the iron directly to the ribbon. Continue heating the ribbon until the strip is bubbled (figure B).
- Cut small strips, diagonally, in diamond shapes or whatever you desire, and apply double-sided tape to the back of them. Stick them to the sides and rim of a wastebasket (figure C).
- Apply double-sided tape to the back of cabochon jewels, and attach them to the pieces of ribbon (figure D).
- Apply a bead of Tulip Dimensional Paint around the edge of each piece of ribbon (figure E).
