Brad Staggs provides tips on storage and proper disposal of house-paints.

    • When storing paint, consider pouring a small amount of each type you're saving into sealable canning jars (figure A). That way, if you have to go back later and do touch-ups, you won't necessarily have to go to the trouble of opening and re-sealing the gallon container.

    • When storing paint in its can, be sure to wipe down the rim (figure B) before seating the lid.

    • Tip: Before sealing the can with the lid, first cover the opening with plastic-wrap (figure C), then put the lid securely into place and tap it down. This will help ensure an airtight seal.

    • Tip: To help avoid that "skin" that forms on the top of paint stored in a can, consider storing the tightly sealed cans upside-down (figure D).

Important: Make sure the lid is on securely before storing paint cans in this way.

    • Avoid storing paint in extreme heat or extreme cold. Either extreme can damage the paint. Extreme heat can lead to a fire hazard if you're storing oil-based paint.

    • For disposal of latex or water-based paint, pour the leftover paint into a paper bag containing sawdust, sand or cat-litter (figure E). Then you can dispose of the absorbed paint with other trash.

    • Important: When disposing of oil-based paints, check with your county's hazardous-waste convenience center for local guidelines on disposal. Irresponsible disposal of oil-based paint leads to toxic environmental pollution and public-health hazards.

    Recap:

    • Know the type of paint you're storing or disposing of (oil-based or water-based).

    • Store paint properly and safely.

    • Dispose of paint responsibly.
