Brown or rusty stains on your ceiling or wall are usually the sign of a leaky roof. Before you begin trying to clean up the stain, try to determine what caused it. Once you've solved that problem, here are suggestions for getting rid of the stain. - Purchase a stain remover (available from home centers), and spray some of it onto a dry cloth.
- Use the cloth to rub the stain lightly.
- Use a white-pigmented shellac or stain-blocker to conceal the stain. Spray or paint it on the wall. This will help to prevent the stain from bleeding through the paint.
- Once the shellac dries, paint the wall the color of your choice.
- If you notice signs of mildew stains in your bathroom or kitchen, follow these same steps to stop the mildew from spreading.
