Homeowners Ty and Lora are about to become first-time parents. Decorative painter Shannon Kaye helps prepare their nursery by painting multiple stripes for their French-inspired theme.
The project starts by finding the center point on the biggest wall. From the center point, the wall is marked every 12 inches. A level and a pencil are used to mark the vertical lines every 12 inches around the perimeter of the room (Figure A). (A chalk line or laser line can also be used to mark the lines.) Then painter's tape is applied directly on the lines. The ceiling, baseboard and window trim are also taped off so they wont get paint on them.
When using the roller, they start in the center of the stripe and make long strokes so the paint distributes evenly (Figure B).
After the first stripe dried, painters tape is applied for the second stripe. The new strip of tape is laid on the left side of the tape that was used to mark off the first stripe (in the area that wasnt painted (Figure C). The new strip of tape is lined up perfectly with the existing strip of tape to ensure a uniform width on the stripe. The second stripe is painted soft beige to contrast the green stripe.
The tape is pulled off at a 45-degree angle so any fresh paint isnt peeled off too (Figure D).
Once the second stripe dries, tape is applied to both side of the yellow stripes (the areas that were not previously painted) (Figure E).
The smaller stripes are painted darker green and the wider stripes are painted brown (Figure F).
