    Remodeling and Tools

    Tips:

    • Speed remodeling time by drilling 1/8" holes in your speed square at 1/4" intervals along the right-angle edge of the square. Run the lipped edge of the square along the board's edge and you'll be able to mark boards as quickly as the pros.

    • To maximize the value of your remodeling project, always choose materials and finishes that blend with your home's existing construction.

    • Always consider the values of the homes in your neighborhood before investing in expensive remodeling projects. Extraordinary investments may be difficult to recover.

    • A metal index file in your workshop is the best place to store your tool's owner's manuals, warranties and receipts for easy reference.

    • You can tell if a tool needs sharpening by examining the blade under a bright light. If the edge of the blade reflects light it is dull and needs sharpening. A sharp edge will be so thin that it won't reflect light.

    • You can make raised panels by running wood sideways through your table saw. For a 1/2 inch thick panel, crank a sharp carbide blade 1/4 inch. above the table. Clamp a slotted 2 x 4 fence perpendicular to the blade leaving 1/4 inch of the blade exposed. Gently run the panel past the blade and repeat on each side for a custom-finished look.
