    Figure C

Beverly DeJulio, founder of Handy Woman's Workshop, uses gold paint and a calligraphy marker to write decoratively on a wooden table.

    Materials:

    Unfinished wooden end table
    Sandpaper
    Tack cloth
    Primer
    Base coat of acrylic paint
    Accent® gold acrylic paint
    Paper plate
    Foam brushes
    Paintbrushes
    Pencil
    Calligraphy marker
    Old toothbrush

    1. Sand an unfinished wooden end table, remove sanding particles with a tack cloth, and apply primer and a base coat of paint.

    2. Pour Accent gold acrylic paint onto a paper plate. Paint the edges of the table gold with a foam brush (figure A). To add an heirloom look, remove some of the gold paint. Paint the edges of the legs and the top of the table skirt, if desired.

    3. Write words on the top of the table in pencil--a poem, a nursery rhyme, a favorite quotation, etc. Write the message diagonally across the top, starting in the upper left corner (figure B).

    4. Use a calligraphy marker to go over the penciled words (figure C). A calligraphy marker has a felt tip that's squared off at the end and a broader, bolder writing surface than a calligraphy pen, although a pen may also be used.

    5. Pour black acrylic paint onto a paper plate. Dip an old toothbrush in the paint, and remove some of the excess paint. Spatter the top of the table over the handwriting by running your finger over the bristles of the toothbrush. Repeat with gold paint or any other colors of your choice.
