    Tips:

    • A 4" section of drinking straw wrapped around your toilet's pull chain will keep the chain from getting caught under the flapper valve.

    • Plumbing failures can strike when you're not home. Save the day by marking important plumbing lines and fixtures in your basement or crawl space with inexpensive baggage tags.

    • Rubber duckies aside, a four-minute shower uses 50 percent less water than the average bath.

    • A milk jug can help you get a handle on rolled trash bags. Cut a large X in the bottom of the container. Then, thread the first bag through the spout and store the roll inside.

    • Natural bristle brooms will last longer if you dip the bristles in a shallow container filled with thinned shellac.

    • You can remove rust from small hardware by soaking it overnight in carbonated cola.
