Carol Duvall, host of HGTV's The Carol Duvall Show, and crew traveled to the 1998 National Art Material Trade Association Convention in Las Vegas and focused on exhibitor Theresa Airey, who employs new technology to produce old-fashioned black-and-white "photography."

    Materials:

Computer with a scanner and printer
    Black-and-white photograph
    Watercolor paper
    Pastel-colored pencils
    Kneaded eraser
Facial tissue, cotton ball or cotton swab

    1. Scan the black-and-white photograph and print the image on watercolor paper.

    2. Color selected areas lightly, using pastel pencils (figure A).

    3. Soften the pencil lines, and distribute the color, using a tissue or a cotton ball or swab (figure B).

    4. Lift color off the page and correct any mistakes with a kneaded eraser.

    5. Add highlights and background color. Add yellow highlights to produce a "glow" on the photograph (figure C).
