    Figure C

    Materials (figure A):

Gold frame (our example requires an 8" x 10" mat)
    Cardboard
    Linen
Paper-backed fusible webbing such as Wonder-Under(T) or HeatnBond(T)
    Scissors & pinking shears
    Craft knife
    Metal-edge ruler
    A beautiful leaf or leaves
    Glue gun

    1. Remove glass and mat from frame. Set the glass aside.

    2. Cut 2 pieces of cardboard to fit within the frame.

    3. Based on the size of your leaf, determine the size of opening, and draw it in the center of one piece of cardboard.

    4. Carefully cut out the opening with the craft knife.

    5. Use this piece of cardboard (the mat piece) to place over the uncut piece of cardboard (the backing piece) and outline the cutout area on the backing piece of cardboard.

    6. Press the linen for the background and cover the mat by making slits in the corners and wrapping the linen around the back.

    7. Cut 2 pieces of fusible webbing: a large piece (10" x 13") for the matte and a small piece (6" x 6") for the backing. Fuse these to the linen. Trim around the edges of paper fused to linen with pinking shears.

    8. Use the cut mat cardboard to center over the large piece of linen with fusible webbing and mark the center opening in pencil.

    9. Cut out a small square (1-1/2") in the center. This will eliminate extra bulk on the finished mat.

    10. Remove the paper from the fusible webbing on the large piece of linen and place it carefully over the mat cardboard, lining it up so that the center cut square is in the center of the mat opening. Iron carefully to the cardboard.

    11. Turning it over so the cardboard is on top, carefully cut from the center corners of the linen and webbing to the corners of the mat opening. This should leave approximately 1-1/2" of fused linen, which you will wrap around the mat opening and fuse to the cardboard.

    12. Cut away the outside corners of the linen to remove bulk, then fuse these flaps around the outside edges of the cardboard. Press both sides of the mat cardboard to set fused linen (figure B).

    13. Remove the paper and place the small square of fused linen over the square you marked in the center of the background cardboard. Fuse to set.

    14. Place the mat over the background, place leaf in the center (figure C) and adhere with a small dot of glue.

    15. Return glass, mat and background to frame and tack into place.

    Tip:

    • The original mat may be reusable if the opening is the right size.

Products: Old frames may be found at garage sales or antiques stores. Fabric and fusible webbing are available at fabric stores.
