    Figure D

Craft expert Kathi Cardinalli brings the outdoors inside by making elegant picture frames using herbs and rocks right from the garden.

    Materials:

    Wooden picture frame
    Lavender
    White glue
    Foam brush
    Small bowl
    Brown paper

    1. Select a picture frame that is fairly broad and flat so the lavender will easily stick to the surface (figure A).

    2. Using a foam brush, apply a layer of white glue to the surface of the frame ( figure B).

    3. Place the frame on a piece of brown paper. Gather a handful of lavender, and drop a generous amount over the wet glue. Continue until the entire frame is covered with lavender. Tap the lavender gently with your fingertips (figure C).

    4. Set aside the frame. Lift the paper, and scoop the excess lavender back into the bowl. Since it is rather expensive, you don't want to waste any.

    5. Let the glue dry. The lavender has a lovely texture and fragrance.
    Variations

If using heavier objects such as stones to cover the frame, use a glue gun and hot glue rather than white glue, and lay out the pattern before gluing the stones in place. Use a generous amount of glue, and apply it to each stone. Remember that the frame will be visible between the stones. You can paint it with acrylic paint or leave it the natural wood color. Stones may be purchased at craft stores, aquarium stores and nurseries (figure D).
