    Figure E

Robin Reed, formerly of Country Sampler Decorating Ideas magazine, shows how to add barnyard designs to wood frames. She decoupages seed packets to a wood frame, adds wood-burned western designs to another and adds hardware pieces to a third.

    Materials:

Unfinished wood frame from Walnut Hollow®
    18 to 25 seed packets
    Plaid Royal Coat® decoupage medium
    Foam brush
    Craft knife

    1. Cut off the fronts of the seed packets.

    2. Arrange packet fronts on the frame, allowing room to fold them over the outer and center edges of the frame. Any empty spaces on the edges can be filled with paper scraps (figure A).

    3. Apply decoupage medium to the backs of the packet fronts with a foam brush. Wrap packets around frame edges, and trim with a craft knife, adding more decoupage medium as needed (figure B).

    4. To finish the frame and protect the images, apply two coats of decoupage medium. The decoupage medium will be milky when it's applied but dries clear. Let the medium dry between coats.

    Brand-It Country Frame

    Materials:

Unfinished wood frame from Walnut Hollow
Delta Ceramcoat® paint in Tomato Spice
    Dressmaker's carbon paper
    Matte spray acrylic sealer
    Foam brush
    Wood-burning tool with universal tip
    Sandpaper
    Tack cloth
    Water
    Pencil
Book with western designs, or draw your own freehand designs
    Ruler

    1. Sand the frame, and remove particles with tack cloth.

    2. Paint the unfinished frame with water-thinned Tomato Spice acrylic paint.

    3. With a pencil, draw a line approximately 1/4" from the edge of the frame all the way around. Add pairs of slash marks randomly on the line to give the look of barbed wire (figure C).

    4. Find brands in a western book, or design your own. Use dressmaker's carbon to transfer designs onto the frame in a pleasing arrangement.

    5. Use a wood-burning tool with a universal tip to burn the border lines, barbed-wire lines, slashes and brands into the frame. Turn the tip slightly on its side for a thicker line.

    6. Spray the frame with a matte acrylic sealer.

    Hardware Heaven

    Materials:

Unfinished wood frame from Walnut Hollow
    New hinges and latches
    Modern Options® Instant Rust Kit
    Stain or gray acrylic paint
    Water
    Paintbrushes
    Screws
Rasp, chisel, chain, nails and hammer
    Screwdriver
    Paper towels

    1. For the look of aged barn wood, distress the unfinished frame, using any of the following: rasp, chisel, chain, nails or hammer (figure D).

    2. Apply a stain or watered-down acrylic paint to the frame. We mixed gray acrylic paint with water for a weathered gray wash and rubbed it into the wood with a paper towel. Rub on a stain over the top of the wash to add a weathered look.

    3. Purchase hinges and latches, and give them a rust coating. Use Modern Options Instant Rust Kit, and follow the manufacturer's instructions (figure E).

    4. Arrange hinges and latches around the frame. Attach to the frame surface with screws. Use shorter screws if those that come with the hinges are longer than depth of the frame.
