  • Herb Container (Quick Tip)

Herb plantings can be beautiful as well as delicious. Many culinary herbs are perfect candidates for growing in containers. Here are some basic herb-growing suggestions from Ask DIY Gardening specialist Jessie Mack Burns.

    • Select a container that has a drainage hole, and that is large enough for the selection of herbs you intend to be growing.

    • Clay pots look more natural for growing herbs, but plastic containers can work just as well and require watering less frequently.

    • Select a combination of culinary herbs. This may include basil, tarragon, dill, parsley, rosemary, oregano or thyme.

    • Keep in mind the size of the mature plants and the size of the container when planting.

    • Plant the taller varieties first, such as basil, in the center of the pot. Continue planting with cascading or trailing varieties, such as thyme and creeping rosemary, toward the outside of the pot.

    • Place the pot in a sunny location, and remember to water frequently.
