Horticulturist Eric Williams gives Kim Haworth a few tips on creating geometric woody topiaries.
The type of tree used in this segment is the juniper, which is easy to work with and has a natural Christmas-tree shape.
The aptly named poodle-pompon topiary is created by gradually pruning away the parts you want to disappear. First mark them with tape or paint, and then cut away the excess. It isn't necessary to make a perfect pompon right away: take your time to work at it, and the shape will come.
To form a spiral topiary, you must start at the top and spiral around the tree, marking off as before any sections you want to get rid of. You may not be able to see the shape right away, but after a couple of turns it will begin to appear.
