12 Tips to Keep in Mind:
  • A sure sign that a wooden deck has water damage is if nail heads are popping out of the deck boards.
  • Redwood and cedar have natural chemicals that resist water and bugs better than oak, pine or maple.
  • Adequate air circulation beneath wooden patio stairs will help to prevent mold growth and rot.
  • Don't use pressure-treated lumber on countertops or anywhere the boards may come in contact with food or drinking water.
  • Using galvanized nails and zinc-coated bolts, washers and nuts will prevent rust on wooden decks and fences.
  • Before beginning any outdoor construction, first check with local authorities to determine if a permit will be necessary.
  • For a truly durable and low-maintenance deck, consider building it of composite lumber. Composites are especially great around pools and hot tubs because they will not rot or split or crack when exposed to water.
  • A well-lit deck or patio can be enjoyed well into the night. Adequate lighting is especially important around stairs.
  • Built-in seating can expand the usability of your deck or patio. In addition to providing seating, they can function as a railing, space divider and provide storage.
  • Gazebos add shelter and an attractive architectural element to any backyard. Consider covering a hot tub with a large gazebo for added privacy and protection from the weather.
  • Brick or stone patios, courtyards and fences are more expensive to build initially but will last much longer than the same structure made of wood.
  • Before digging anywhere in your yard, check with your local utility companies. Rupturing an underground water, power or gas line is more than just a hassle — it can be a fatal mistake.
