    Figure I

Mary Lyon, host of DIY Crafts, demonstrates the origami folding technique for a crane that will impress your friends.

    Materials:

    Origami paper

    1. Place the colored side of the paper face down on the work surface.

    2. Fold the paper diagonally from the upper-right corner to the lower-left corner. This is called a napkin fold and produces a triangle. Crease the fold (figure A).

    3. Fold the lower corner to the upper corner. The folds will be on the edges to your right and the bottom edge facing you. The shape will be triangular (figure B).

    4. Pull the top corner straight up so that the top triangle is perpendicular to the work surface. Open the triangle, and match the top corner to the corner to the left. The fold will create a square (figure C).

    5. Flip the paper over, and open the other triangle, matching the top corner to the left. The folded paper will look like a square (figure D).

    6. Open one square by pulling the open corner up, and fold it back on itself. Leave a small triangular crease at the opposite corner. Bring the long edges together, forming two triangles that meet in the center (figure E).

    7. Flip the paper over, and repeat step 6. You will now have a diamond shape (figure F).

    8. Fold each of the long edges of the triangles toward the center.

    9. Flip the paper over, and repeat step 8 (figure G).

    10. Fold the ends of the long triangles back up over the short ends.

    11. Pull the side triangles out (figure H).

    12. Fold the tips of three of the triangles over for the beak and two wings (figure I).
