    Figure A

Silhouette art dates back to ancient Chinese dynasties but didn't become popular in this country until the 18th century. Home craft expert Kathi Cardinalli brings the art form up to date with easy ways to make paper silhouettes.

    Materials:
Photos of subjects in silhouette pose (facing the side)
    Peel 'N StickB. adhesive
    Black paper
    White paper
White or colored tracing paper (so you can see it on the black paper)
    Ballpoint pen
    Scissors or craft knife
    Picture frame

    1. Go through family photos to find pictures of subjects facing the side--the silhouette pose. Your pet dog or cat makes a good subject too. Or choose a photo of a vase. Remember, it's the outline that's important. Have the photo copied at a copy center.

    2. Cut a rectangle of black paper large enough to fit the silhouette image. Apply Peel 'N Stick adhesive to the back of the black paper.

    3. Place tracing paper between the copied image and the black paper. Tape all three sheets in place. Trace around the outline of the image with a ballpoint pen, being sure to draw as much detail as possible (figure A).

    4. Cut out the image using scissors or a craft knife. If you're using a craft knife, it's sometimes easier to keep the knife stationary and move the paper to get smooth lines and curves. Manicure scissors work well for cutting intricate designs. Use the tool you feel most comfortable with.

    5. When you've cut out the silhouette, peel away the backing on the adhesive-backed paper, and center the image on white paper or in a frame. Place single silhouettes in separate frames, or place several in one frame.
