For this particular square, guest Curt Cyr used a color copy of a birch tree photograph. Another great idea would be to use photos of family members or friends. Be sure to use color copies only so they won't fade or turn yellow.

    Figure B

    Materials:

30 sheets papyrus and/or handmade paper cut to desired size
    100 split-ring key tags
    Craft knife
    Metal straightedge
    Scotch tape
    Hole punch
    Pencil
    Ruler
    36"-long wood lath or dowel
    2 cup hooks
    2 eye hooks
    10 pieces of 4"-long raffia
    2 pieces of 24"-long raffia

Note: These directions will yield a decorative panel that's 36" x 60", 5 panels across by 6 panels high. To make a larger or smaller panel, simply add or subtract rows until the desired size is achieved.

    1. Measure and cut the papyrus or handmade paper to desired size. We used 8" x 10" as our size.

    2. In the sheet's 4 corners, measure in 1/4" from each side and mark. This will be the edge of the punch hole. Reinforce the corners with Scotch tape.

    3. Stack several sheets of paper together, taking care to line up the edges. Punch each of the corners, leaving 1/4" of paper to the edge. Continue until all sheets of paper have a hole in each corner.

    4. Separate the split rings from the key tags.

    5. Line up the first row of punched paper side by side. Connect the first 2 sheets of paper with the rings (figure A): top right hole to top left hole, bottom right hole to bottom left hole. You now have 2 sheets connected horizontally. Now add a third in the same manner. Continue connecting the first row until 5 sheets are connected with rings. Repeat this process with the second row.

    6. When 2 rows are complete, place one row above the other and connect the holes on the bottom of the top row to the holes on the top of the bottom row. You should have 2 rows of 5 sheets of paper attached with rings.

    7. At the intersection of 4 sheets of paper there will be 4 rings. Each hole should have 2 rings, one connecting vertically to the sheet above and one connecting horizontally to the sheet beside. Continue until the panel is completely connected together.

    8. Thread the 4" length of raffia through each hole on the top row of the completed panel. Knot each length evenly.

    9. Measure in 1" from each end of lath or dowel and mark. Screw in eye screws (figure B). Insert lath or dowel through raffia rings.

    10. Thread a 24" length of raffia through each eye screw and knot evenly.

    11. Attach 2 cup hooks in the ceiling the same distance apart as the eye screws on the lath or dowel.

    12. Hang panel from the two longer lengths of raffia.

Tip: This hanging looks spectacular when lit from behind. It can be used as a background for sculpture or on its own. Hang it several inches from the wall and illuminate with a can light on the floor. It is equally impressive when used as a window treatment to obscure a less-than-desirable view, yet it allows light to filter through into the room.

Products: Check out the art-supply store for interesting papers. They have a myriad of choices ranging from handmade textures featuring fibers and natural bits to hand-blocked printed papers. The split rings used in this project can be found at office-supply stores. They may be attached to paper key tags. The rings need to be separated from the paper tag.
