Materials: Quill Envelope templates -- found at craft stores Adhesive Sepia-tone liquid ink Bone folder Vintage postage stamps Stipple brush Cornstarch or baby powder Yarn or string Wrapping paper with lettering pattern Sepia-tone inkpad Cooking parchment (bleached or unbleached) - Use an envelope template (figure A) to cut out several envelopes from cooking parchment. Crease the fold lines with a bone folder, but don't fold the envelopes yet.
- If you're using bleached parchment, place as many cutout pieces from step 1 on a baking sheet as will fit without touching one another. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes at 325 degrees, then remove to cool. The paper will take on a light-tan color (figure B).
- When the paper has cooled, fold each piece into an envelope and glue it together, leaving the top flap open.
- Cut out a piece of wrapping paper with old-fashioned lettering on it and insert it into the envelope to simulate an old letter. Glue the top flap closed.
- Affix vintage postage stamps to the envelope with adhesive and stipple around the edges of the envelope lightly (figure C) with sepia-tone inkpad ink applied with a stipple brush.
- Since the surface of cooking parchment has a slightly waxy finish, it may be necessary to dust it lightly with cornstarch or baby powder; otherwise the ink you use to address the envelope may bead up.
- Address each envelope with a quill and sepia-tone ink.
- Tie a bundle of envelopes together with pretty yarn.
Tips: - Take care not to bake the paper too long, as it may crumble.
- If using unbleached parchment, you may not need to bake it because it's already light tan in color.
- If using cornstarch or baby powder, use a soft brush to remove excess powder or blow it off. Do not brush it off with your hand, as this deposits oils, which also act as a resist.
- A glass-dipping pen may be substituted for a quill pen.
- Stamp your vintage postage stamps with postal cancellation stamps to simulate a used appearance.
