  • Golf Tips: Keeping the Swing in Line
  • advertisement

Question: It seems as though I can begin my round with a nice, slow swing, but during the round, things happen, and my swing gets harder and faster. By the time I get to the last hole, I look like a different golfer from the one who teed off on No. 1. What can I do to maintain the same tempo all the way through the round? -- J.S., Naples, FL

Answer: The tempo of your swing is determined by speed at which you take the club away from the ball. The tendency is to pick the club up abruptly with the hands and arms. This motion establishes a quick, choppy motion, which lasts throughout the swing.

At address, imagine a triangle, which goes from your hands, to your right shoulder, to your left shoulder and back to your hands. Initiate your back swing by slowly turning your body, keeping the triangle intact, until your right elbow begins to fold and your wrists begin to hinge.

If you begin each swing this way, you'll create a slow, full swing arc, which leads to more solid contact, more distance and a consistent swing tempo throughout your round.
