DIY Family Sports host Belma Johnson is joined by bocce enthusiast Andrew Calvanese, who has been playing the sport for 60 years, since he was 12. In competition, the court must be 76 feet long by 10 feet wide. There is, however, no standard size for a home bocce course: it can be 40 feet long, or 80, or somewhere in between; and the width should be 8 to 12 feet but can vary according to available space. Calvanese explains the finer points of setting up a backyard bocce course: - First determine the desired size. Place a flag at the point that will be one corner of the course, measure the desired length (figure A) , and place a second flag. Repeat for the width, the other long side, and the fourth side.
- When all four flags are in place, measure one-half of a long side and place a flag at that point. Then measure half of the distance between that flag and each of the two corner flags on the same side; place a flag at each of those points to mark foul lines.
- Drive a stake at each corner (figure B) and stretch a string around the stakes to form a rectangle (figure C).
- Use spray paint, marking chalk (figure D), or flour to mark the borders of the rectangle and the foul lines (the previously marked points on each side as well as a line three feet from each end of the course and connecting the long sides).
- If you wish, mark the long sides of the court with 2-by-8-foot lumber or landscaping timbers (figure E); players will be able to bank their bocce off these sideboards during play.
