Because radio-control channels facilitate different maneuvers, these sailboats can be used in competitive races.

Perry Schultz doesn't just build radio-control sailboats: he races them against other enthusiasts. To him, it's not just a hobby -- it's a sport. Schultz makes his own sails in his garage workshop. The sail is the most important part of the boat, serving as the "engine". Schultz frequently modifies sails to increase speed. Electronics inside the hull maneuvers the sail control and rutter (one radio channel controls each). A keel and ballast keeps the boat balanced, and the boat comes with small-scale fittings and attachments for the sail -- similar to those on an actual sailboat. Schultz's goal is to win a national award in radio-control boat racing but says he will continue to enjoy the hobby with enthusiasm and aplomb even if that goal is never achieved.
