All croquets sets include wickets, balls and mallets, but material quality, size and price vary among sets. - A beginner's set is typically made for children, as the mallets are lightweight and small. The balls are proportionate to the mallet, and the wickets are scaled down (figure A). A beginner set can be purchased for around $20.
- A family-sized set, which is larger and slightly more expensive, is versatile nevertheless and can be used by all family members.
- Sets for advanced players are superior in both craftsmanship and materials. Both the balls and the mallets are more substantial in size and weight. Advanced sets include a smasher (figure B)-- a small, sturdy mallet used to hammer the heavier wickets and stakes into the ground. Wickets are color-coded so the correct depth is achieved when driving them into the ground.
- A special caddy can facilitate easy movement around the court. Carrying cases similar to those used by golf caddies are another option.
- Once a long, flat, even court is chosen for play, it needs to be measured and marked. Marking chalk will temporarily mark the court and is a good choice for lawns. A more permanent option is to mark the court by stringing between stakes and adding flags in regulation placement.
