Create this herbal bouquet with a huge rose as the centerpiece. Be creative when combining herbs, and experiment with the different aromas.

Growing herbs in the garden yields a number of benefits both practical and aesthetic. Holly Shimizu, the managing director of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, Virginia, shows how to use popular herb varieties to create tea, potpourri and decorative arrangements. Other featured projects include an herbal bath sprinkle and an herbal smoke diffuser. These homemade luxuries provide affordable alternatives to store-bought favorites and make great gifts for friends and family.

    Herbal Bouquet (tussie-mussie)

The following herbs -- and a rose as the centerpiece -- were used to create a beautiful tussie-mussie bouquet:

    • Rose = love

    • Lemon verbena = enchantment

    • Lavender = devotion

    • Rosemary = remembrance

    • Cinnamon basil = good feelings

    • Sage = wisdom.

To create the bouquet, simply wrap the herbs together with floral tape, making sure the rose is the centerpiece.

    Bath Sprinkle

Place rose petals (fresh or dried) and lavender in a basket, mix well, then fill a cheesecloth or muslin bag and tie with a ribbon.

    Tip:

    • Shimizu says if you use good-quality herbs, there's no need for fragrant oils.

    Herbal Diffuser

Simply cook several of your favorite herbs and spices (Shimizu used sandalwood, cinnamon sticks, lavender and Chinese star anise, etc.) in a diffuser.

Tip: Be sure to crush the herbs before putting them in the diffuser. This brings out the aroma.
