Note: Almost 80 years ago hitching a ride by train was for some folks a romantic way to see the country. These travelers, or hobos, developed their own subculture, which in turn spawned a craft called "tramp art." Project designed by guest Vivian Peritts. Materials: The Nut Case cardboard box #30018 by Mixed Nuts 12" x 12" Paper Reflections paper by DMD Industries (two sheets walnut; one sheet navy) 8-1/2" x 11" sheets marigold, four sheets burgundy, one sheet ivory 8" x 12" Corobuff metallic corrugated paper by Bemiss-Jason (one sheet silver) 12" x 16" Spectra Corobuff mini-flute corrugated sheets by Bemiss-Jason (one sheet natural) 12" x 16" Spectra wavy ridges by Bemiss-Jason (one sheet natural) Acid-free double-sided adhesive tape Thick tacky glue Pinking scissors Scalloped-edge scissors McGill's Canyon Cutter -- The Rockies and Pompeii McGill Craft Punches (giant heart and and 1-1/4" circle) Longreach (5/8" circle) McGill punchlines (1/4" hole and 1/4" square One silver 2-1/2" nail - Construct box according to the package instructions.
- Cut walnut paper -- front of box --11-1/2" x 2-3/4", top of lid -- 11-1/2" x 8-1/4", top back -- 11-1/2" x 2-1/8". Trim all three pieces with pinking scissors and apply to box using sticky dots. Cut two box sides out of walnut paper to match sides and apply to box sides.
- Cut strips of wavy ridge natural paper and cover the sides of the box along the edge all around and along the top edges of the back piece (figure A). Cut and apply a strip of wavy ridge to the front of the box lid.
- Cut navy paper to 8" x 10-1/2" and trim with pinking scissors. Apply to the top of the lid. Cut natural corrugated paper to 8" x 10-1/2" with Pompeii scissors, punch 1/4" hole in each large loop and apply to lid.
- Cut ivory corrugated paper 9-1/2" x 6-1/2" and apply to lid. Cut burgundy corrugated paper 9-1/2" x 6-1/2" with Rockies scissors. Add a 1/4" hole in each outward dip. Apply to lid.
- Cut navy wavy ridge paper 7-1/2" x 5" and apply to lid (figure B ). Cut silver corrugated paper 7" x 4-1/4" and apply to lid. Cut navy corrugated paper 6-1/4" x 4" with Rockies scissors. Punch 1/4" holes in each outward peak. Apply to lid.
- Cut and apply remaining pieces, making each slightly smaller than the previous one. Cut marigold 5-1/4" x 2-1/2", followed by burgundy, then natural, navy, marigold and burgundy again. Trim each piece with the pinking scissors.
- Top lid with the 1" scalloped natural circle and a 1" burgundy scalloped circle.
- Cut two of pattern A out of natural wavy ridge paper and apply to the sides of box on the curved section. Cut two natural ridge triangles 5" along the bottom by 4" x 6". Apply to the back bottom corners of the sides. Make triangles progressively smaller, trimmed with the pinking scissors, to top the natural triangle, in the following colors: burgundy, silver, navy and natural wavy ridge.
- Using the pinking scissors cut 2-1/2" burgundy corrugated circles and apply to the side of the box near pattern A. Glue a 1-3/4" x 1-3/4" x 1-3/4" natural wavy ridge triangle below the circle.
- Cut a 2" x 2" marigold square and apply it to the side front bottom corner. Top it with a pinked navy square and pinked wavy ridge square. Above the marigold square glue a 2" x 1-1/8" pinked wavy ridge rectangle.
- Glue one yellow wheel on top of the burgundy circle and a large navy coiled circle on top of the front square on the side.
- For the top back and the front of the box cut three strips of natural mini-flute corrugated strips with the Rockies or the Pompeii scissors. Decorate with the hole punch. Apply to the box.
- To the bottom front of the box, add a yellow wheel to the center bottom and a burgundy heart on each side.
- To make the lid handle, cut two strips of navy corrugated paper 11" long and progressively smaller, starting at 1-1/2" wide and ending at 3/4" wide. Add 3/4"-wide burgundy strips, wrapping once. Push the nail through the center of the lid and glue in place.
- To make the back top edge of the box back, cut five navy strips 1/2" wide. For the first strip, roll each end in 2-1/2" and glue the center 6" to the top of the box. Roll the second and third strips the same way but 2" in from one end and 4" in from the other. Leave 2" unrolled and glue these on either side of the first strip with the small coils to the outside. Glue two yellow wheels at the center. At the ends, make two small navy coils. Punch two natural 5/8" circles and glue to the small coils.
- To make the feet, cut four 2" x 8" strips of the navy corrugated paper. Mark a top edge 1-1/2" from the bottom corner. Cut all four strips with pinking scissors on the top edge as marked.
- Cut four 1-1/2" x 8" strips of navy corrugated paper. Mark the top edge 3/4" from the bottom corner. Cut all four strips with the pinking scissors on the top edge as marked.
- Roll one of the first strips starting at the 2" end. Glue as you roll. Attach the 1-1/2" end of the second strip at the end of the first strip and continue gluing. Secure with rubber bands until dry. Glue to the bottom of the box.
Yellow Wheel: Punch 7 marigold circles and glue into a stack. Glue a strip of marigold corrugated paper all around the raw edges. Small Coiled Circle: Cut a 1/2"-wide strip of corrugated paper. Glue as you go and coil tightly. Heart Stack: Punch 7 hearts out of burgundy corrugated paper. Glue into a stack. Glue 1/2"-wide burgundy strip around raw edges. Start and end at the top of the hearts. - Use tacky glue to adhere all to the top of the box.
