Now comes the fun part: cutting through the layers of silk to create the slashed effect. Slashing the Panels: With a pair of small, sharp scissors, cut in the middle of the stitched channels (figure A). - Cut one layer of dupioni at a time, and vary the layers you cut.
- Never cut through the organza layer.
- In some channels you will cut to the organza for a see-through effect in a few places.
- You don't have to slash all the way across a channel with each cut: you can vary the length and depth of your slashes to reveal different colors in as controlled or random manner as you choose.
Second Stitching: - Chalk-mark a 45-degree line perpendicular to your first rows of stitching.
- Stitch a slightly wavy line, opening out and stitching down one side of the slashes (so that all the slashed fabric points in the same direction). This is what creates the scalloped shapes in the feathery frays (figure B). Do one of these wavy stitched lines about every 3" all along each panel.
Washing: - Place the cut and stitched panels into the washing machine with a bath towel, cold water and no detergent. Wash briefly on the gentle cycle.
- Put into the dryer and dry for a few minutes until just damp.
Brush, Press and Trim: - Brush each row down with the stiff brush -- a nail brush (figure C) works well for this step. This will start to remove the loose threads and make the feathery frayed scallops.
- Press until dry and then trim any loose or odd-shaped scallops. (Note: You will lose a few strips at this point. Don't worry.)
- Brush, press, and trim until you like the way the panels look.
