Cut several strips of bias at varying widths -- from 2" to 3" or even 4" wide -- from the 1/3-yard pieces of accent colors, making sure they are on the true bias (figure C).

With a 45-degree ruler, draw a chalk line on the bias on each dark color. Make sure you have a left and a right panel.

Start laying the accent colors at random, keeping their edges on a true 45-degree angle (figure D). You may overlap colors and build up two layers all over the panel (figure E). Pin the strips into place as you go.

When the panel is covered, baste the strips in place and remove the pins (figure F).

Lay the matching jacket fabric panel over the strips; pin and baste into place. Baste from the organza (bottom) side with long stitches on the organza side and short stitches on the top (matching jacket fabric) side: this prevents the foot of the sewing machine from tangling in the basting stitches. (You can create different effects by laying your strips on in a variety of ways.)

    Stitching the Panels:

Identify the right and left panels. Draw a chalk line at a 45-degree angle on each panel -- at the same angle as the strips were laid on. When they are put together at center front, the lines form a V.

    1. Stitch along the chalk line.

    2. Now set your quilting bar (figure G) at 3/4" to 1" away from the chalk line.

    3. Turning your panel, stitch another line, using the quilting bar to keep the distance even as you stitch.

    4. Continue making stitching channels on the entire panel, turning and matching the distance between stitching lines with your quilting bar. Do this on both pieces.

    5. When stitching is complete, remove the basting threads. (You can vary your stitching patterns for different effects -- see Section 5.)
