Serging the zipper opening will make for a neater seam, especially when you're working with fabric that frays easily.

So-called "invisible" zippers don't always live up to their name, but taking a couple of extra steps may solve the problem.

    1. Press the zipper open before sewing it (figure A). It's been pre-pressed to make it less noticeable when it's sewn in, but pressing it open beforehand will make it easier to insert.

    2. Baste the zipper into the side seam of the skirt (figure B).

    3. Sew the zipper into skirt using invisible zipper foot.

    4. Sew side seam leaving an opening for a side slit at the bottom.
