    Bias-Neckline Shirt:
    1-1/8 yards linen
1 package double-fold bias tape, pressed flat
    Butterick pattern

    1. You can cut your own bias strips or use purchased bias. If you are using purchased bias, begin by pressing it flat.

    2. Begin with the shoulder seams of your garment already sewn. Remember that most patterns include 5/8" seam allowance. If you want the bias edge to finish at the seam line, you will need to trim this off first. Stay-stitch at 1/2".

    3. Place the edge of the bias at the raw edge of the neckline and stitch at 1/2".

    4. Press the bias up toward the raw edge (figure A). Fold the bias around the 1/2" seam allowance (figure B). Pin the bias along the inside edge of the neckline by pinning at two points and then pinning again between the points. This will reduce buckling in the bias (figure C). Stretch the bias strip very slightly as you pin to help ease it around the curve of the neck.

    5. Finish the bias by turning under the raw edge and slipstitching closed by hand.
