Press the bias toward the edge of the seam allowance (figure C). Fold the bias around to the back of the seam. "Stitch in the ditch" (i.e., sew directly in the channel formed when you sewed the bias strip to the shirt seam allowance), catching the bias along the back of the seam (figure D). Trim any excess from the back of the seam (figure E). Note that the Hong Kong finish leaves a raw edge on the back of the seam. This eliminates any bumps or ridges from forming on the front when you press the shirt (figure F). Bias Binding for Seams: - Cut 1"-wide strips of coordinating skirt fabric (chiffon, georgette, crepe).
- Begin with the seams of the shirt already sewn, leaving the shoulder seams open.
- Stitch the bias to the shirt seam allowance, with a seam allowance between 1/8" and 1/4".
- Press the bias toward the edge of the seam allowance.
- Fold the bias around to the back of the seam (figure G). Turn under the raw edge. Pin along the ditch from the front, being sure to catch the edge of the bias fold. Stitch. For a more couture finish, stitch the bias by hand.
