In this episode of Sew Much More, host Susan Khalje discusses reinforcing seams and hems with La Fred designer Fred Bloebaum.

    Materials:
    Phoebe t-shirt pattern
1-1/4 yards knit fabric (45"-60" wide)
1/4" clear elastic (enough to reinforce two shoulder seams)
Small amounts of fusible knit interfacing (SofKnit)
    Polyester thread
    Stretch needle #75
    Stretch twin needle
    Woolly nylon thread
    Rotary cutter

    Reinforcing the Shoulder Seam

Because the shoulder seam bears the entire weight of a knit garment, expert Fred Bloebaum believes it's a good idea to reinforce it.

    1. Lay out pattern pieces on knit fabric according to the pattern instructions. Mark all notches and dots on fabric.

    2. Adjust the machine's stitch to a narrow zigzag.

    3. Pin t-shirt together at shoulder seams with right sides together. Cut a piece of clear elastic the length of each of the shoulder seams. Stitch the elastic to one side of the shoulder seam (figure A), centering the elastic over the seam line and catching it in stitching as you sew. Press the seam open (figure B), being careful not to burn the elastic.

Optional: Press seams toward back; topstitch 1/4" away from the seam line through all thicknesses.

Expert tip: If reinforcing the shoulder seam with clear elastic causes the seam to pucker, try this technique:

    4. Cut two pieces of fusible knit interfacing the length of the shoulder seam by 1/2" wide. Before sewing the seams, fuse (figure C) each strip of interfacing by the front shoulder seam, with one edge just barely extending over the seam line . Stitch shoulder seams.
