You've mastered the side pocket, the lined patch pocket, the single-welt pocket. Now you're ready to take on the double-welt pocket -- and you'll soon be putting them on just about everything you sew!

    Materials:
    2-1/2 yards suiting fabric
    1/4 yard cotton for pocketing
    3/4 yard fusible interfacing
    One 1/2" button to cover
    7" zipper
    Pants hook and bar
    Butterick pants pattern
Sewing notions: scissors, thread, hand-sewing needles, pins, etc.

    Steps:

    1. Interface the welt area on the wrong side of fabric and mark the pocket placement.

    2. Stitch the welt to the pants back along the pocket placement lines (figure A).

    3. Carefully cut the welt open, making a clean cut line exactly in the center of the welt, and clipping into corners (figure B).

    4. Pull the welt through. To create the "lips" of the welt, fold the welt over the cut seam allowance, using the seam allowance to help create the welt edge (figure C). Pin and stitch in the ditch around the perimeter of the pocket opening.

    5. Make the pocket bag out of cotton. The area that will be behind the pocket opening should be faced with the pants fabric (figure D). Also, interface where the buttonhole will be. Note that the pocket bag extends all the way up into the waistband.

    6. Stitch the prepared pocket to the bottom edge of the welt. Stitch a buttonhole through the pants and pocket layer (figure E).

    7. Fold pocket up and stitch the side seams. From the outside, stitch in the ditch along the top of the welt, through all layers (figure F).

    8. Don't forget to sew your button on!
