Welt pockets can be a bit intimidating at first, but as Susan Khalje demonstrates, they're really not much more difficult than any other type of pocket. Just take a little more care in measuring and marking, and you'll soon be a welt expert!

    Materials:
    2 yards linen for skirt
1/8 yard contrast linen for welts
    1/8 yard fusible interfacing
    1/4 yard lining for pockets
    7" zipper
    McCall's pattern
Sewing notions: scissors, thread, hand-sewing needles, pins, etc.

    Steps:

    1. Begin by reinforcing the wrong side of the welt area with fusible interfacing. Mark the pocket placement on the interfacing (figure A).

    2. To make the welt, sew the sides of the welt. Trim, turn and press. Machine-baste along the stitching line.

    3. Stitch the welt to the bottom line of the marked pocket. The welt should point down, and the raw edge will point to the waistband (figure B).

    4. Place the pocketing over the welt on the right side of the fabric (figure C). Stitch through all layers along the original marked pocket line.

    5. Using small, sharp scissors, carefully cut the pocket open, clipping to a V shape at the corners.

    6. Turn the pocket to the inside of the skirt and press. Stitch and serge around the pocket bag (figure D).

    7. On the right side, press welt up in place and topstitch the sides of the welt to the skirt. Press.
