The lined patch pocket is a classic -- useful as well as decorative, it can coordinate or contrast with the garment on which it's sewn.

    Materials:
    2-3/4 yards cotton shirting
    Eight 3/8" buttons
    1 yard fusible interfacing
    McCall's shirt pattern
Sewing notions: scissors, thread, hand-sewing needles, pins, etc.

    Steps:

    1. Cut pocket and an identical piece for the pocket lining.

    2. Mark the stitching lines of the corners with chalk before stitching so the corners will be exact (figure A). Begin sewing the pocket from the bottom edge, leaving a 2" opening so it can be turned (figure B).

Clip, trim and turn the pocket. Press flat. Use a point turner and be sure all the corners are properly turned.

    3. Stitch across the top of the pocket at 1".

    4. With the pocket pinned to the shirt, start at the 1" stitching line and sew up to the top edge of the pocket, to 1/4" away from the pocket edge. Pivot and stitch to the pocket edge, and continue stitching around the perimeter. This creates a triangle-shaped reinforcement at the pocket opening (figure C).
