This view of the vest shows the lapels tied gracefully; they can also be left hanging loose.

Another of Kayla Kennington's designs is sewn in a sheer fabric and embroidered with a floral motif, its panels connected with beaded bar-tacks.

The last few steps are no more difficult than the first. A few bar-tack stitches and a little patience, and your vest will come together as easily as the top did!

    1. Connect right back F panels to center back J panel beginning at the second marked connection spot.

    2. Where four F panel come together at the shoulder, hand-baste an X to secure all corners (figure A), then go back and use the bar-tack machine stitch to sew shoulder seams.

    3. Sew the center back seam of the two pieces of lapel K, and press open. Fold the lapel and sew a seam along the long edge to form a long tube, leaving short ends open. Turn and press.

    4. Mark connection points for the lapel.

    5. Connect the lapel to the back center panel J and the front F panels. Hand-baste the shoulder to the lapel, where it makes a three-point V-shaped connection. Then go back and secure with the machine bar-tack stitch, continuing bar-tacks down each side of lapel.

    6. Try on the panel vest with side seams still open. Pin sides together so that it is most flattering for you and won't interfere with the sleeves of the top you'll wear under it. Mark the connection points for side seam and sew bar-tacks.

    7. Turn in raw edges of open hem sides on all panels, press and hand- or machine-stitch.
