Linda Nusum crochets away to create a page of scenic design using colorful yarns and silver charms, and Susan Strug creates a fabric collage page of images and words.
Crochet and Silver Page
Materials:chunky wool yarn (for base page) large crochet hook sewing thread sewing needle accent yarns (for border and details) embellishments (beads, charms, etc.) metal letters and brads or eyelets chopsticks or wooden dowels 1. Use 2 fibers to make a slipknot (one fiber for the base color and the other, an eyelash or furry fiber, to create a ground color, in this case the grass).
2. Using a jumbo crochet hook, crochet a chain of 12-14 stitches (figure A).3. Crochet 1 extra stitch, turn and crochet into the first stitch, slip-stitch crochet across and continue this pattern for 2-3 rows until reaching the desired height. Tie off the furry or eyelash yarn at this point. 4. Continue with the base-page fiber until completing a total of 12 rows.
5. Using a complementary fiber, crochet around the square at least 2 times (or until reaching the desired dimensions). This creates a border for the page.6. Charms, beads and pressed-metal letters can be sewn on as embellishments. Use thread or yarn that matches the base page to ensure the stitches do not show (figure B). 7. Use matching or contrasting brads to attach the letters. 8. Cut chopsticks or wooden dowels into 4 even pieces to create a frame for the page, giving it structure. Insert the chopsticks evenly into the stitches along all 4 sides, crossing them at the corners and securing them by wrapping yarn around the corners (figure C). Binding the Book Now it's time to put all the pages together.
Materials:grommets (do not use scrapbooking eyelets) hinge rings (available at any office-supply store) or large wire jump rings (handmade of 18-gauge wire). wire-cutter grommet tool hammer wood dowel 1. Mark all pages with dots indicating where the grommets will go. Do not include the crochet page: the rings can be slipped right through the stitches.
2. Create a template from a strip of cardboard the same size as the pages (figure D).3. Punch holes 1⁄2" from the top and bottom of the left edge. Space two or three more holes equal distances between the top and bottom holes. Line up this template on each page and use a marker to make a dot in each hole. 4. Using a hole-punch of the correct size for the grommets (a size smaller than the grommet size is best), punch a hole at each dot.
5. Insert the grommets and secure with the grommet tool and a hammer (figure E).6. Stack the pages and bind together using the hinge rings or large jump rings. 7. To make jump rings, twist an 18-gauge wire multiple times around a wood dowel of the desired size for the jump rings. Slide the coil off the dowel. Using wire-cutters, cut through the coil from top to bottom. Each section of the coil now becomes one jump ring. Hammering these provides a rustic look.
