Host Allison Whitlock shows how to crochet a jute cover for a cylindrical vase.
Materials (for a 10" tall, 4" diameter vessel):
2 skeins jute packing string at least 55 meters long 1 skein worsted-weight yarn in a natural beige shade cylindrical glass vessel, 4" in diameter 4 yds. leather strapping or trim 5mm crochet hookHolding both the jute string and the yarn together, create a slipknot and ch 4 to start. Slipstitch to join. Ch 1. Sc twice into each ch. Slipstitch to close the circle and ch 1.
On the second and consecutive rows you'll increase at a decreasing rate. Row 2: Work 2 sc into the first st and one sc into the second st. Continue to the end of the row, slipstitch to join. Ch 1. Row 3: Work 2 sc into the first st and one sc into the second and third st. Continue to the end of the row, slipstitch to join. Ch 1. Continue increasing until you have a circle the size of the base of your vessel (figure A). You're now ready to work up the sides. For the next row, and all consecutive rows, sc all the way, working only into the back loop of the st to create a ribbed effect.
When the cover is almost the length of the vessel, change to leather and continue to work three more rows. Slipstitch to finish. Weave any loose ends in using a tapestry needle or crochet hookYou can also miss this last step and finish off in one of two ways: blanket-stitch embroidery, using DMC Pearle floss (figure B); or using either backstitch or chain to embroider an organic design onto the front of the vessel cover.
