  • Funky Scrap Pillow
  • This project makes great use of leftover yarn.
    From "Uncommon Threads"
    episode DUCT-116

Too many yarn scraps lying around the house? Tiffany Roots crochets all the little pieces together into a great striped pillow cover--and to avoid the sewing in all the little ends, she carries the yarns throughout, since they will be hidden on the inside anyway.

    Funky Scrap Pillow
The Funky Scraps Pillow is worked with bulky yarns, a large crochet hook and the single crochet stitch (figure A), which make it a very easy evening or weekend project. This pillow is worked using seven texturally different yarns in alternating rows. To keep with the scrap theme, it's possible to use a different yarn for each row for the entire project, but to give everyone an idea of what it can look like if one wanted more control over the colors and textures, this version uses just seven colors. This design incorporates carrying unused yarn along the side edge of the pillow, which leaves you with much less work weaving in ends during the finishing steps.

    Materials:

Patons Yarns Voodoo #08108 (Storm Blue) (A): 2 balls
Patons Yarns Classic Merino Wool #00229 (Natural Mix) (B): hold two strands together throughout
Patons Yarns Carmen #07108 (Steel) (C)
Patons Yarns Divine #06013 (Deep Earth) (D)
Patons Yarns Allure #04011 (Sable) (E)
Patons Yarns Bohemian #11110 (Indigo Indulgence) (F)
Patons Yarns Pebbles #10110 (Blue Marble) (G): 2 balls
aluminum crochet hook, U.S. size N (9.00 mm)

    Abbreviations:
    ch (chain)

    Special instructions: changing colors:
At the end of each row, you will work the last stitch as follows: yo, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop (two loops on hook). Drop the current color and pick up the next color. Do not cut the previous yarn: you will pick it up again in later rows. Yo, pull through the two loops, completing the stitch.

    Finishing

Working into the corresponding loops, weave the yarn back and forth down the pillow edge, making sure that the loops created by carrying the yarn are on the inside of the pillow (figure B).

    1. Align the two pillow sides with the right sides facing each other. Using one strand of B, whipstitch three of the pillow side edges together, leaving the fourth open for pillow form insertion.

    2. Insert pillow form (figure C). Holding the edges together, whipstitch across (figure D). Finish off and weave in ends.
