  • Jute Rope Basket
  • Jute rope and yarn combine to create a small color-flecked basket.
    From "Uncommon Threads"
    episode DUCT-116

Marlo Cairns uses jute and yarn to crochet a small basket: the jute is the base and the yarn adds accent color throughout the rounds.

    Abbreviations:
    ch (chain)
    sc (single crochet)
    sl st (slip stitch)

Ch 2, work 6 scs in 2nd ch from hook, do not join the rounds; use a small piece of yarn to mark the beginning of each round (figure A).

Round 2: 2 scs in each st around.

Round 3: 2 scs in 1st st, 1 sc in next st around.

Round 4: 2 scs in 1st st, 1 sc in next 2 sts around.

Round 5: 2 scs in 1st st, 1 sc in next 3 sts around.

Round 6: Sc in each st around.

The Landscapes yarn is held together with the jute rope, starting in round 7 (figure B); it's randomly used in the basket and dropped whenever you wish--very freeform. Do not cut the Landscapes yarn until the basket is finished. Cut yarn and weave in the ends through the front and inside of the basket (figure C).

Round 7: 2 scs in 1st st, 1 sc in next 4 sts around.

Round 8: 2 scs in 1st st, 1 sc in next 5 sts around.

Rounds 9-15: Sc in each st around.

Round 15: Using just Landscapes, work a reverse single crochet around (figure D); fasten off yarn and jute rope.
