Niru Merchant embroiders many of her own clothes and costumes -- including this folk-dancing garment, her favorite.

Niru Merchant learned Indian embroidery -- known worldwide for its use of bright colors -- from her grandmother. Indian embroidery patterns can date back many centuries, but Merchant prefers to create more contemporary patterns and combine them with traditional stitches.

Indian embroidery stitches can be intricate and difficult to learn, but Merchant has spent years mastering them and has expanded her techniques to include Brazilian embroidery and shisa, which includes the use of small mirrors and glass as part of the design.
