Isela Phelps gives a primer on the circular and rectangular loom families, showing how to cast on, create a knit stitch and knit a tube and a flat panel. Then she shows how to knit a Fair Isle hat.
Fair Isle Hat
Materials: round knitting loom with a peg multiple of 12 (motif is a multiple of 12sts) knitting tool yarn: 200 yd. main color (MC); 50 yd. contrasting color (CC) (Berroco Ultra Alpaca was used in sample) tapestry needle 3 stitch/peg markers (8 stitch/peg markers) optional: row counter Loom note: Sample 1 was knitted on fine-gauge loom with 96 pegs by Décor Accents; sample 2, on regular-gauge loom with 60 pegs, also by Décor Accents. Size: Adult Gauge: Regular-gauge loom: 13sts and 20 rows = 4" Fine-gauge loom: 24sts and 32 rows = 4" Pattern notes: - Use 2 strands of yarn throughout on regular-gauge loom; use 1 strand throughout on fine-gauge loom.
- Instructions in parenthesis are for fine-gauge loom.
- When working chart, carry colors loosely together at back of work across a maximum of 3sts. When carrying colors across more than 3sts, weave it over and under the other color at every 4th st or at center point of stitches it passes over.
- Remember to keep yarn consistency: grab the main color from over, reach under the main color for the contrasting color.
Chart stitch pattern: multiple of 12 sts x 20 rows (see link, at right)Abbreviations: bo bind off co cast on k knit (knit stitch/flat stitch) p purl st st stockinette stitch sts stitches Place stitch/peg markers 12 spaces apart. Each chart repeat takes 12 stitches, so place the markers to help you keep track of where you are on the chart. With MC, co 60 (96) in the round using the chain method (figure A). Round 1: *k2, p2; rep from * to the end of round. Repeat Round 1 until brim measures 2" from co edge. Next 20 rounds: Knit the 20 rows from chart. Be sure to repeat the chart instructions 3 (8) times around the loom. Work in st st for 1-1/2" (3") (figure B); bo.
