Now we know why alpacas are always smiling. Alpacas, which are native to South America and are members of the Camelid family, produce fiber that is as much as eight times warmer than wool. These gentle animals have been domesticated for some 6,000 years and were important to the Inca culture as a source of food, fuel and clothing; in fact, use of their fleece was forbidden to all but Inca royalty.
