With a strand of A, cast on 18 (26, 34, 38, 46, 50, 58, 66) sts. Work in garter for 2 rows. Change to B. Row 1 (RS): K1, wyif sl 1, k1, p2 (DKSS edge), place marker (pm), k to last 5 sts, pm, p2, k1, wyif sl 1, k1 (DKSS edge) Row 2 (WS): Wyif sl 1, k1, wyif sl 1, k2, slip marker (sm), p to next marker, sm, k2, wyif sl 1, k1, wyif sl 1. Row 3 (RS): DKSS edge, sm, m1 (grandma increase: insert needle into stitch below next st, knit it, then knit above increased st and slip off needle), sm, work to next marker, sm, DKSS edge. Block piece. With a single strand of A crochet around entire edge of garment. Fit garment to dog. Create twisted cords and sew in the correct placement to tie at dog's neck and chest. Alternatively, place fastener so the loop portion is on the under side of right edge and the hook portion of fastener to outside of left edge. Hand- or machine-sew loop side of fastener to piece.
