    (Continued from page 2)

Christina Batch makes gorgeous circles on a scarf using wool yarn and a hand-felting technique. Then she shows how to make more spots, this time from wool roving.

    PHOTO

Circles felted of wool yarn will be used to embellish a ready-made scarf.

The Yarn-Embellished Scarf is at the left in this photo; felted circles also make perfect embellishments and accessories.
    Yarn-Embellished Scarf

    Materials:

1 skein Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Bulky
    felting needle tool
felting needle mat (or wide-based bristle brush)
    straight pins
    scissors
    disappearing-ink marking pen
    knitted wool scarf to embellish
circle template (or any available circular objects to trace)

    1. Trace circles onto scarf using template or round objects, such as jar lids, bowls, etc.

    2. Working one circle at a time, lay out yarn along traced lines.

    3. Pin yarn into place.

    4. Place scarf onto felting needle mat; working small sections at a time, punch yarn with needle tool until it becomes embedded in scarf.

Tip: The longer you "needle" the item, the harder the felt will become and the smaller the fabric shrinks down. Usually within a few minutes, it will stick together quite nicely.

Note: Be sure to remove pins before felting. Felting needles are fragile, so also avoid felting onto a hard work surface because if the needle hits a hard surface, it can snap very easily. Should that occur be sure to locate both pieces before continuing work.

    5. Continue felting, adding circles as desired.

Tip: When felting to achieve fairly thin or flat items, be sure to lift them away from the foam or bristle brush work surface fairly often.

    6. Hand-sew yarn to scarf every few inches to secure. (Hand wash only.)

    Needle-Felted Dot Embellishments

    PHOTO

These circles were felted from wool roving and applied to the pair of slippers and the hat in the photo above.
    Materials:

small amounts of wool roving (1/2 oz. or less) in 2 separate colors
    felting needle tool
    felting needle mat
    scissors

    Central Circle

    1. Pull off a small piece of wool roving from the first color. Twist it slightly so the edges are clean and loop it into a circle shape.

    2. Place the wool on the mat and punch it with the needle tool until the shape lies flat.

    Outer Rings

    1. Pull off a small piece of wool roving in the second color, twist it slightly and place one end under the edge of the felted circle.

    2. Punch with the felting needle tool to attach the two.

    3. Continue around the circle's edge, felting to attach. Repeat with a contrasting color, making alternating rings as desired.

    Center

Pull off a length of contrasting roving, fold it into circle shape and felt it to the center of the swirl. Continue, adding a small ball to the center of circle, if desired.
