The secret to creating the woven feel of this kilt is in the intersecting yarn colors and the slip stitch pattern.Materials: yarn - Crystal Palace "Iceland" Bulky Singles 3 balls in Sienna (A) 2 balls in Claret (B) 1 ball in Leaf (C) 1 ball in Wite (D) needles - U.S. size 11 circular (32" length) 2 metal buckles
Preparation Wind off (figure A) 8 small reels of A, 3 small reels of B and D, and two small reels of C.Using long tail cast on method and a full ball A, cast on 114 sts for waist.
Preparation row WS: Continue with A wyif, p1, wyib, slip 1, repeat to end. Begin Slip Stitch Pattern (below). See charts for vertical and horizontal color placement (figures B and C).Slip Stitch Pattern (Over even number of stitches)
Row 1: Establishing MC and CC, wyib, k1, wyif, slip 1, repeat to end. Be sure to bring the new color over the previous color so there arent holes between colors (figure D). Row 2: Continue colors as established. Row 3: Using color indicated, wyib, k1, wyif, slip 1, repeat to end. Row 4: With same color as row 3 wyif, p1, wyib, slip 1, repeat to end Repeat rows 1-4 for pattern (figure E).
Finishing Slip stitches off needle. With thread to match A, hand- or machine-stitch through the edge of the row, previous to open stitches (figure F) to stabilize a loop fringe on the bottom edge of the kilt (figure G).
Try on kilt and overlap right front over left front, placing buckles along the opening where they can be comfortably adjusted (figure H). Sew hook and eye to top waistband.
