    1. Place stitch marker and join sts in the round, being careful not to twist sts (figure A).

    Figure B

    1. Work 5 rows of K2P2 rib, then continue in the round knitting every stitch until piece measures approximately 6". While knitting the body of the hat, you will incorporate holes all over by including a * yo, k2tog * whenever you would like (figure B). For effect, the hat "should" have at least 30-40 YOs.
    2. Begin decreasing as follows:
    • First round: *k2tog, k6, rep from * to end of round (63 sts remain)
    • Next round: knit
    • Next round: *k2tog, k5, rep from * to end (54 sts remain)
    • Next round: knit
    • Next round: *k2tog, k4, rep from * to end (45 sts remain
    • Next round: knit
    • Next round: *k2tog, k3, rep from * to end (36 sts remain)

    1. Switch to double pointed needles at this time, removing the stitch marker.
    • Next round: knit
    • Next round: *k2tog, k2, rep from * to end (27 sts remain)
    • Next round: knit
    • Next round: *k2tog, k1, rep from * to end (18 sts remain)
    • Next round: *k2tog, rep from * to end (9 sts remain)

    • Bind off all stitches, making a small hole in the top of the hat (figure C); you'll need this later.

    PHOTO

    Figure D

    1. Using one double-pointed needle, cast on 3 sts and work an I-cord (figure D) to at least 6 feet (about the length of a scarf). Bind off, weaving in ends.

    1. Thread the I-cord through the holes (figure E), weaving in and out, leaving lengths of I-cord draping on the outside of the hat (figure F). Pull it straight across the surface on the inside.
